Simulations for dynamics of granular mixtures in a rotating drum

چکیده
We present a simple model and carry out simulations to investigate the dynamics of mixtures of granular material within a rotating drum. On the basis of the commonly held belief (supported by considerable experimental evidence) that segregation is due to motion of particles on the active layer, the bulk playing little or no role, we introduce a 2d lattice gas model which takes into account the rotational frequency, frictional forces, and the gravitational field, and represents segregation tendencies via activated effective grain-grain interactions. Our results include the onset of segregation perpendicular to the drum axis, the appearance and subsequent coarsening of bands and peculiarities of the effects of periodic modulation of the drum. Observed effects such as the segregation of rougher (smoother) particles into the bellies (necks) of the modulation are reproduced by our simulation.

Size segregation of granular mixtures which are almost completely packed in a rotating drum is discussed with an effective simulation and a brief analysis. Instead of a 3D drum, we simulate 2D rotating thin box which is almost completely packed with granular mixtures. The phase inversion of radially segregated pattern which was found in a 3D experiment are qualitatively reproduced with this sim...

We simulate size segregation in granular mixtures which are almost completely packed in a rotating drum. The phase inversion of a radially segregated pattern which was found in a 3D experiment is qualitatively reproduced with this simulation. A global convection appears after a rad...
متن کاملExperimental and Numerical Studies of Granular Flows in a Rotating Drum
Granular flow in a rotating drum is studied by experiments and by Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The particulate phase is modelled based on the Continuum Eulerian Approach (CEA) in the simulation. The particulate phase CEA prediction using the common Gidaspow granular kinetic viscosity or the Syamlal-O’brien granular kinetic viscosity fails to predict the measured dynamic angle o...

We formulate a phenomenological model for the segregation of binary mixtures of rough and smooth granular materials in a rotating drum. Our model successfully replicates a range of experimental behaviours, e.g., rapid radial segregation; slow axial segregation; and nonuniform radial structure of axial bands. We present some analytical results and detailed numerical results for our model.
متن کاملSimulated three-component granular segregation in a rotating drum.
Discrete particle simulations are used to model segregation in granular mixtures of three different particle species in a horizontal rotating drum. Axial band formation is observed, with medium-size particles tending to be located between alternating bands of big and small particles. Partial radial segregation also appears; it precedes the axial segregation and is characterized by an inner core...
